Background
Citizens and equipment manufacturers are concerned about electromagnetism effects. In aeronautics, in particular, researches have been undertaken, mainly by industrialists, supported by research centres and universities, with the aim of “EM Protection and Compatibility”. Research is still going on in order to acquire understanding and know-how on EM threat in complex environment (multi targets and EM multi sources). However, progress is still needed to approach as close as possible the propagation of electromagnetic radiations and their influence on the aircraft and outside/inside the airport buildings. For such, we need to master an extremely precise simulation of the airport environment and of the electromagnetic propagation. Currently several sets of tools exist, some being dedicated to airport modeling, others to EMC simulation in the airport vicinity. SIRENA has researched on new generation airport modeling tools associated with EM large area method tools.
Projects objectives
The SIRENA first objective is to evaluate accurately the impact of the EM environment on the aircraft, the airport field and buildings, and close to the airport. The correlated second objective is to address safety and security issues in order to recommend for immune emitters and give advice for the EM airport environment.
In order to achieve the general objectives, the research focuses on intermediate scientific and technical objectives as indicated here below:
Obj1: To get airfields mock up as close as possible to reality.
Obj2: To get EM source mock up as close as possible to reality.
Obj3: To get EM field value as close as possible to reality.
Obj4: To have EM fields interpretation as simple as possible.
Obj5: To set up recommendation and advice.
Achievements
Mastering fast methods for Airfields 3D modeling to achieve a virtual geometrical mock up and to enhance it with EM physical data to achieve a virtual physical/geometrical mock up.
Accurate processing of far and near field EM diagram to characterize EM sources.
Acquisition of an efficient and accurate method to assess the EM propagation paths within the 3D scenes from sources to receivers in order to quantify the level of received EM field.
Setting up of interactive EM fields’ visualisation enabling a global EM phenomena understanding in the scope of recommendations for standardisation.
Providing aircraft/equipment manufacturer with a solution to characterize the ambient EM field (for accurate modeling of equipment behaviour vis-à-vis EM).
Assessment of the limits of EM interferences from the exploitation of the generic parametric simulation.
Recommendations for immune emitters and advice on EM impact on the airport and in the vicinity of the airport.
