CEV:
Development and integration in the Tiger Helicopter simulation of CHORALE tools for the sensor and synthetic environment modelling

Background
Optronic sensors are currently used in two ways in defence area . The traditional use is the detection of targets or of unusual objects in an environment in order to protect themselves. The second one is the enhancement of the flight domain, enabling a better visibility, especially under bad weather conditions such as fog or night. Therefore, Simulators taking care of their sensor part are able to enhance greatly the security (protection, detection and visibility) of aircrafts.

Endeavouring an efficient study of the impact of better capacities of flight and of smaller detectability on the vulnerability of aircrafts in an operational environment, the French CEV (Centre of flight tests) decided to strengthen the sensor part of its helicopter simulator. OKTAL-SE has been the selected company to ameliorate the sensor simulation of this helicopter simulator.

Through the integration of SE-Workbench tools, both in Infrared and in Electromagnetic, within the CEV hardware, the general purpose of this project called “development and integration in the Tiger Helicopter simulation of CHORALE tools for the sensor and synthetic environment modelling” is the widening of studies capacities of the CEV simulator, in the detectability reduction and flight domain enhancement areas.

Projects objectives
Objectives can be divided in two parts. On the one hand, the project studies the effect of the position of sensors (in infrared or electromagnetic domain, both for active and passive sensors) on an aircraft in order to extend the flight domain. On the other hand, the project aims the study of Infrared signature reduction possibilities of an aircraft in a battlefield. Within this framework, precise projects objectives are:

  • Test issues in order to reduce the infrared signature
  • Increase the flight domain : propose new ways of visibility evaluated by pilots (Man Machine Interface)
